Who Are We?

In the fall of 2003, a group of young Charleston professionals, with a passion for orchestral music, was disappointed with the lack of young adults attending performances presented by their West Virginia Symphony Orchestra. Borrowing on an idea from the Greenville Symphony Orchestra, in Greenville , SC this group of young professionals set out to form a group aimed at inviting and engaging more young professionals to experience the joy and excitement that live orchestral music can bring. In addition, the group would be aimed at bringing young professionals together from many different disciplines to communicate, socialize, and network. A steering committee quickly took shape, and in just a few short months the DSC boasts a roster of over 120 registered members.

Who can become a member?

Although our efforts are geared toward exposing a younger audience to the joys of orchestral music, we use the term “younger” quite loosely. Anyone with an interest in socializing, learning more about the WVSO and orchestral music in general, whatever the age, is welcome to join.

When and where does the DSC meet?

The DSC has numerous relationships with business establishments within the city. By design, the DSC will attempt to change the location of our gatherings on a rotating basis, in order to give a fresh perspective and aid in engaging an increasingly diverse group of people.

The DSC attempts to hold regular gatherings the week before each West Virginia Symphony Orchestra performance. However, specific details on the exact date, time, and location will be e-mailed to registered and prospective members well in advance.

Accomplishments:

To date the DSC has held numerous social gatherings at local establishments around the city of Charleston , bringing hundreds of young professionals together in an atmosphere conducive to establishing lasting relationships with both the WVSO and one another.

In addition, the DSC engaged in its first ever fundraising event as a part of the WVSO's Symphony Sunday Weekend in June 2004. The DSC and member volunteers brought back to the weekend event the “Symphony Fun Run” held on Saturday morning June 5, 2004 . The event raised more than $1,500.00 and established the DSC as a viable fundraising entity aimed at aiding the WVSO in its continued success.
