West Virginia Symphony Orchestra Announces 2010-2011 SeasonThe West Virginia Symphony Orchestra announces its 2010-2011 season with great guest performers, exciting classical works and a little bit of disco. Artists such as world-class fiddler Mark O’Connor, pianist and WVSO audience favorite Valentina Lisitsa, and Sweden’s The Arrival performing the music of ABBA will grace the stage of the Maier Performance Hall at the Clay Center. Overall, there are over twenty fantastic WVSO concerts for West Virginia audiences to look forward to in the upcoming year. The 2010-2011 Season also marks Maestro Cooper’s 10th year as artistic director and conductor of the Symphony.
The Symphonic Series kicks off on September 10, 2010 with David Kim, concertmaster of the Philadelphia Orchestra and Carter Brey, principal cellist of the New York Philharmonic. Following concerts include WV audience favorite Valentina Lisitsa (October 15 & 16, 2010); violinist/fiddler Mark O’Connor (November 12 & 13, 2010); pianist Adam Golka (January 28 & 29, 2011); clarinetist Bob Turizziani and pianists Vicki Berneking and Deborah Gross (March 4 & 5, 2011); and Nancy Maultsby and John Mac Master performing Mahler’s masterwork - Das Lied von der Erde/Song of the Earth (April 15 & 16, 2011). Symphonic Series concerts take place at 8 p.m. at the Clay Center. The ZMM Pops Series is sure to delight and entertain audiences with another season of great guest artists and performances. The first is the WVSO annual tradition, Home for the Holidays with Janet Brown, soprano (December 10 & 11, 2010); Piano Pops! with Rich Ridenour (February 11 & 12, 2011); The Music of ABBA with Sweden’s The Arrival (March 18 & 19, 2011); and From Broadway to Broad Street with Symphony Idol winner Ryan Hardiman and Randall Reid-Smith (May 6 & 7, 2011). ZMM Pops Series concerts take place at 8 p.m. at the Clay Center. The City National Bank Family Discovery Series continues again this season with performances that are perfect for the whole family. It starts with Legends of Appalachia (November 13, 2010); Blast Off! with the Symphony (February 12, 2011); and Take Me Out to the Ball Game (March 19, 2011). City National Bank Family Discovery Series concerts take place at 11a.m. at the Clay Center. Fun activities begin at 10 a.m. The Montclaire String Quartet performs again in Charleston this season at the Kanawha United Presbyterian Church. Performance dates include: October 3, 2010; November 7, 2010; February 6, 2011; and May 8, 2011. The WVSO and The Charleston Ballet will present The Nutcracker on December 17 at 7:30 p.m. and on December 18, 2010 at 2:00 and 7:30 p.m. This annual partnership is a WVSO audience favorite for people of all ages.
